reconstructing and altering an entire book is a formidable test.\u00a0 Even when using cast-off books that are about to be recycled, one is faced with the unnerving sensation of involvement in a destructive rather than a creative act.\u00a0 Through thoughtfully considered and concentrated efforts, repetitive actions such as folding, cutting, scoring, curling, punching, incising, and shredding have altered the book\u2019s original function as an object of information and have transformed it into something new. \u00a0(Deborah Dancy)<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5265\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books1-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"books1\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books1-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books1.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Altered books<\/strong> created by students in Professor Deborah Dancy\u2019s first year studio foundation class will be <strong>on display from March 2 to March 20\u00a0in the Reading Room lobby of Archives and Special Collections<\/strong>. \u00a0Come in\u00a0and allow these altered books to lead you in your own consideration of the form and function of the modern book.<\/p>\n<p>The breadth and variety of works speak to the diversity of interpretations that can be made <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-5266\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books2-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"books2\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books2-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books2.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>about the book as an object of information and of art.\u00a0 Students draw inspiration from nature \u2013 cascading waterfalls, leaves, feathers, flowers, and rolling seas \u2013 as well as from the clean lines of geometry and the rhythm of repetitive shapes.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the students cut into the books, suggesting, perhaps, that to understand\u00a0the book as information and as art one must immerse\u00a0oneself into the very substance of the book.\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books31.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-5269\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books31-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"books3\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books31-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2015\/03\/books31.jpg 240w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a>Other students chose to alter the books so that they expanded\u00a0beyondtheir original physical boundaries, transforming the printed page into a three-dimensional sculpture.<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;
