{"id":533,"date":"2009-09-17T11:40:40","date_gmt":"2009-09-17T15:40:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/doddcenter.wordpress.com\/?p=533"},"modified":"2023-09-20T15:26:20","modified_gmt":"2023-09-20T15:26:20","slug":"remembering-mary-travers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/2009\/09\/17\/remembering-mary-travers\/","title":{"rendered":"Remembering Mary Travers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Mary Travers, part of the legendary folk trio Peter, Paul and Mary, whose protest music helped define the 1960s passed away in Danbury, Connecticut on Wednesday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The interview below is from the December 20, 1976 issue of the socialist newspaper, <em>In These Times<\/em>, part of the Alternative Press Collection.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><strong><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-large wp-image-534  aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/doddcenter.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/09\/in-these-times0021.jpg?w=1023\" alt=\"Interview with Mary Travers\" width=\"473\" height=\"497\" \/><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the interview:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll art forms reflect society.\u00a0 Music does not create the revolution.\u00a0 It articulates it maybe, but it is not a lasting force.\u00a0 Something has to be happening in society first.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c\u2019I think the country suffered terrible blows in the latter half of the \u201860s, she says, \u2018with all the assassination and the unresponsiveness of the government\u2014unresponsive in a way that it had not been unresponsive before.\u00a0 In previous times, when there was extended pressure from people over periods of time, the government moved off the dime.\u00a0 And that didn\u2019t happen in the \u201860s.\u2019\u00a0\u00a0 The election of Jimmy Carter, a \u2018well-meaning person\u2019 may make some difference, Travers believes.\u00a0 \u2018In order to have change you have to have someone who pivots, someone who is responsive to change.\u201d\u2019<\/p>\n<p><strong>The Alternative Press Collection <\/strong>is one of the oldest and largest collections of alternative press materials in the United States.
