{"id":6185,"date":"2016-02-11T16:07:10","date_gmt":"2016-02-11T16:07:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/?p=6185"},"modified":"2016-02-11T16:45:21","modified_gmt":"2016-02-11T16:45:21","slug":"water-pollution-protection-and-play","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/2016\/02\/11\/water-pollution-protection-and-play\/","title":{"rendered":"Water: Pollution \/ Protection and Play"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2016\/02\/Ca4WHLTW4AIJNTh2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-6186\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2016\/02\/Ca4WHLTW4AIJNTh2-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"Ca4WHLTW4AIJNTh2\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2016\/02\/Ca4WHLTW4AIJNTh2-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2016\/02\/Ca4WHLTW4AIJNTh2-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2016\/02\/Ca4WHLTW4AIJNTh2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a>On display now in the McDonald Reading Room, and through February, a new exhibition by Archivist Graham Stinnett examines the\u00a0role that water plays in our daily lives. \u00a0From\u00a0consumption and utility to containment and disposal, clean water relies heavily on human impact on the ecosystem. \u00a0As archival documents reveal, water protection and access to clean drinking water has been a rallying cry for decades, long before it made national headlines, again, last month.<\/p>\n<p>Since the breaking news of the Flint Water Crisis began, a state of emergency within the city of Flint, Michigan was called on January 5, 2016.\u00a0 The city had incorporated its drinking water from the nearby contaminated Flint River which led to the corrosion of aging lead pipes in the city\u2019s waterworks.\u00a0 This leaching of lead began in April of 2014, exposing the population to health risks associated with drinking and bathing in the water unbeknownst to them.<\/p>\n<p>This exhibition draws from collections in Archives and Special Collections, including the <a href=\"http:\/\/doddcenter.uconn.edu\/asc\/findaids\/CCAG\/MSS19870024.html\">Connecticut Citizens Action Group Records<\/a> and the Alternative Press Collection, relating to water and our demands upon it as a resource and a necessity.
