Since December 2014 \u2013when U.S. and Cuban Presidents, Barack Obama and Ra\u00fal Castro, announced their mutual intentions of reactivating the relationship between the two nations\u2014the general interest in Cuba has unexpectedly increased. \u00a0This exhibition, about one of Cuba\u2019s most innovative fine art publishing houses, sheds light on this often misunderstood country. \u00a0While showcasing pieces of remarkable aesthetic value, the exhibition also exposes the\u00a0entire\u00a0UConn community to a little known aspect of Cuba\u2019s cultural production.\u00a0&#8211;Marisol Ramos<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2016\/04\/borges72dpi1234_00321-1024x497.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-large wp-image-6349\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2016\/04\/borges72dpi1234_00321-1024x497-1024x497.jpg\" alt=\"borges72dpi1234_00321-1024x497\" width=\"584\" height=\"283\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2016\/04\/borges72dpi1234_00321-1024x497.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2016\/04\/borges72dpi1234_00321-1024x497-300x146.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2016\/04\/borges72dpi1234_00321-1024x497-500x243.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/a>An exhibition of handcrafted books by members of the world-renowned Ediciones Vig\u00eda, an artist collective and publishing house in Cuba, is on display in UConn\u2019s Homer Babbidge Library through May 2, 2016.<\/p>\n<p>Since its creation in 1985 in the city of Matanzas, Ediciones Vig\u00eda has been internationally recognized as a unique artist\u2019s collaborative, whose work is produced in limited editions and housed in private and public libraries, such as the British National Library, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA), the Library of Congress, and universities throughout the world. Ediciones Vig\u00eda\u2019s catalog encompasses\u00a0works\u00a0by authors such as Baudelaire, Emily Dickinson, Pasternak, Tolstoy, Tagore, and Verlaine, Spanish-language authors such as Borges, Federico Garc\u00eda Lorca, and Gabriela Mistral, and renowned Cuban writers such as Jos\u00e9 Mart\u00ed, Lezama Lima, and Nancy Morej\u00f3n.<\/p>\n<p>According to the exhibition co-curator Marisol Ramos, Latin American &amp; Caribbean Studies, Latino Studies, Spanish &amp; Anthropology Librarian at the University, &#8220;each entirely handmade volume is a genuine piece of art, as well\u00a0as a powerful testimony of struggle and artistic survival and sustainability, showing its creators\u2019 &#8216;advocacy of the aesthetics of the poor, of what\u2019s ugly, and inexpensive&#8217;, as Ediciones Vig\u00eda\u2019s co-founder and chief designer, Rolando Est\u00e9vez said in a recent online interview.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/news\/fine-press-art-books-from-cuba-on-display-in-babbidge\/#.VwKNw_krJaR\">Read more&#8230;<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Cuban Bricolage takes place within an exceptional context.
