G. Thompson and F. L. Cannan,\u00a0published in 1896, gives an overview of different hand holding positions while skating, including face to face, the link, side by side, and the echelon, all with illustrations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\">\n<p>Figure Skating for Women, by James A. Cruikshank, was published in 1921.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center\"><a href=\"http:\/\/doddcenter.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/skating003.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-medium wp-image-831\" src=\"http:\/\/doddcenter.files.wordpress.com\/2009\/12\/skating003.jpg?w=222\" alt=\"\" width=\"222\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2009\/12\/skating003.jpg 1484w, https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2009\/12\/skating003-222x300.jpg 222w, https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2009\/12\/skating003-759x1024.jpg 759w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 222px) 100vw, 222px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It is not extravagant praise of figure skating to say that it is probably the finest sport available to the majority of American women.&#8221;\u00a0 &#8212; James A.
