{"id":9803,"date":"2023-02-13T18:16:33","date_gmt":"2023-02-13T18:16:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/?p=9803"},"modified":"2023-02-13T20:08:12","modified_gmt":"2023-02-13T20:08:12","slug":"encounters-with-the-natural-world-work-by-margaret-waring-buck-katherine-shelley-orr-and-jean-day-zallinger","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/2023\/02\/13\/encounters-with-the-natural-world-work-by-margaret-waring-buck-katherine-shelley-orr-and-jean-day-zallinger\/","title":{"rendered":"Encounters with the Natural World:\u00a0\u00a0Work by Margaret Waring Buck, Katherine Shelley Orr and Jean Day Zallinger\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-full\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2023\/02\/UConnOrrForest001crop.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"329\" height=\"800\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2023\/02\/UConnOrrForest001crop.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-9802\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2023\/02\/UConnOrrForest001crop.jpg 329w, https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/archives\/files\/2023\/02\/UConnOrrForest001crop-123x300.jpg 123w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 329px) 100vw, 329px\" \/><\/a><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>The artists and scientists presented in this exhibition began observing their natural surroundings at a young age.&nbsp; One is the daughter of a draftsman, one a trained portrait painter, one a self-described \u201cdoodler and daydreamer\u201d who loved the sea.&nbsp; Either formally or informally, all have used art to communicate through visual representation what they systematically observed.&nbsp; Each shared their observations in non-fiction books for children in the hope of instilling a strong desire to learn and a curiosity about the world.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On view are paintings, drawings, sketches and notes answering the question \u201cwhat do I see around me?\u201d&nbsp; These artists responded to what the author of <em>The Beginning Naturalist<\/em>, Gale Lawrence, encouraged her readers to do, \u201cbegin to look at what\u2019s around you, ask yourself questions about what you see, and find answers.&nbsp; Only in this way will you establish a meaningful and lasting relationship with the natural world \u2013 of which you, too, are an important part.\u201d&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This exhibition is being shown to complement <em>Raid the Archive: Edwin Way Teale and New Works <\/em>on view at the William Benton Museum of Art, University of Connecticut, from January 17 to March 10, 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UConn Archives &amp; Special Collections&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Richard H.
