Come Into Our Parlor!

You asked for “soft seating” and we listened! Come visit our new, recently opened “parlor” where you will find sofas and other comfortable furniture. It’s a great place to relax between classes, chat with friends or even catch a fast nap.

The Parlor’s present front lobby location is a temporary one and the furniture will be relocated to an adjacent area when our new service desk is built in the lobby sometime in early 2008. Right now we hope to place the future parlor in an even better spot, perhaps near the windows.

Until then — come relax with us. We’ll leave a light on for you.

Group Study Room Opens

In response to interest from Trecker Library users, a new 55 seat Group Study space has opened on the Library’s upper floor. Formerly a book stacks area, the room is a wireless “hot spot” which will allow library patrons with wireless-capable laptops full access to the library’s online resources.Group Study Room

Group Study spaces are designed for noise. Students doing team projects or needing to talk while studying will find this area, and some adjacent smaller spaces, an ideal location to work together without disturbing those who need quiet.

Anyone requiring a quiet space will find the library’s largest reading room, on the main floor, set aside for noise-free activities. This room also hosts wireless service.

Stop by our “front desk” when you have a chance and let us know how you like (or not) our group and quiet study spaces.

Librarian Beverley Manning Retires

October 22, 2007 (update of August 27th entry)

Beverley Manning, who joined the UConn staff in 1968, retired after 39 years of library service. Originally an expert in technical services, Beverley grew into a number of new areas including serving as the library’s acting director and also its operations coordinator.

At the time of her retirement, effective October 1st, she was Trecker’s sciences and humanities bibliographer/liaison, its coordinator of collections services, a reference librarian and a highly regarded teacher of library and research skills.

On September 19th, 40 colleagues gathered at lunch to give Beverley a well deserved send off. A few days later, Campus Director David W. Williams gave Bev an informal farewell fete that drew another 20 faculty and staff well-wishers. Among many unusual retirement gifts was a framed official statement from Governor M. Jodi Rell in which Beverley’s years of achievements and dedication to public service were lauded. As can be seen in the following photo, taken by Trecker librarian Marsha M. Lee, the retirement events were very happy ones for Beverley.
