{"id":1007,"date":"2016-01-06T14:22:38","date_gmt":"2016-01-06T19:22:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/humanrights\/?p=1007"},"modified":"2016-01-06T14:22:38","modified_gmt":"2016-01-06T19:22:38","slug":"the-case-against-individuals-70-years-after-nuremberg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/humanrights\/2016\/01\/06\/the-case-against-individuals-70-years-after-nuremberg\/","title":{"rendered":"The Case against Individuals  [70 Years After Nuremberg]"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/11134\/20002:1470\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/archives.lib.uconn.edu\/islandora\/object\/20002%3A1470\/datastream\/TN\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nuremberg Palace<\/p><\/div>\n<p>On January 9th, 1946, the\u00a0prosecution of\u00a0individuals\u00a0continued as Mr. Roberts presented his case against Keitel and Jodl.\u00a0Interrogated months earlier by Thomas Dodd,\u00a0the prosecution\u00a0attempted to elicit new knowledge.\u00a0 In his presentation, Roberts outlined Keitel&#8217;s actions of encouraging military preparations and war as described in \u201cthe Common Plan\u201d. Mr. Robert demonstrated\u00a0his detailed knowledge of the Common Plan (The conspiracy produced by the F\u00fchrer that Germans were a superior race, and that war was a necessary and honorable act) <!--more-->by stating that Keitel, \u201cparticipated in the planning and preparation for wars of<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/11134\/20002:860046691\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/archives.lib.uconn.edu\/islandora\/object\/20002%3A860046691\/datastream\/TN\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Wilhelm Keitel addressing the Tribunal<\/p><\/div>\n<p>aggression and in violation of treaties, he executed the plans for wars of aggression and wars in violation of treaties, and he authorized and participated in War Crimes and Crimes against Humanity\u201d [http:\/\/avalon.law.yale.edu\/imt\/01-09-46.asp#keitel accessed 1\/04\/2016].<\/p>\n<p>Two days later, Lieutenant Colonel M. C. Griffith-Jones from the (United Kindgom) Junior Counsel presented the case against Julius Streicher. Streicher was indicted for crimes against humanity. Unlike Keitel, who promoted aggressive war, Streicher promoted the active hatred of those of Jewish decent bu others within the German citizenry. He further advocated for the extinction of the Jewish race. Griffith-Jones discussed how Streicher did this for 25 years and had become known by the nickname \u201cJew-baiter Number One\u201d. The Lt. Colonel continued his description of the man as \u201can accessory to murder, perhaps on a scale never attained before\u201d [http:\/\/avalon.law.yale.edu\/imt\/01-10-46.asp#streicher accessed 1\/04\/2016].<\/p>\n<p>The next few days saw the presentation of the cases against the other Nazi criminals with Doenitz, Funk and Schacht coming after Streicher.<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/11134\/20002:860046718\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/archives.lib.uconn.edu\/islandora\/object\/20002%3A860046718\/datastream\/TN\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Walter Funk testifying<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Additionally, individual depositions were introduced before the Tribunal to provide hard\u00a0evidence\u00a0that would later be used to demonstrate beyond doubt the\u00a0villainy of the defendants. Intriguing and detailed testimony came from\u00a0Dr. Franz Blaha, a former prisoner of Dachau, the concentration camp that held political leaders at the time. Dr. Blaha was questioned by none other than Thomas Dodd who related the forced involvement of Blaha\u00a0with Dr. Sigmund Rascher and\u00a0 his medical procedures. Rasher&#8217;s experiments included the effects of liver puncture, cold weather, and air pressure on blameless prisoners. Blaha wrote, \u201cMost of the prisoners used died from these experiments, from internal hemorrhage of the lungs or brain. The survivors coughed blood when taken out. It was my job to take the bodies out and as soon as they were found to be dead to send the internal organs to Munich<\/p>\n<div style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/11134\/20002:5351\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/archives.lib.uconn.edu\/islandora\/object\/20002%3A5351\/datastream\/TN\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nazi medical experiment documentation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>for study. About 400 to 500 prisoners were experimented on. The survivors were sent to invalid blocks and liquidated shortly afterwards.
