{"id":128,"date":"2009-01-29T19:43:24","date_gmt":"2009-01-29T19:43:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/humanrightsresearch.wordpress.com\/?p=128"},"modified":"2009-01-29T19:43:24","modified_gmt":"2009-01-29T19:43:24","slug":"how-to-find-full-text-articles-on-human-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/humanrights\/2009\/01\/29\/how-to-find-full-text-articles-on-human-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"How to Find Full Text Articles on Human Rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"snap_preview\">\n<p>Looking at the stats for this blog, it looks like many people who come here do so after googling \u201cfull text human rights articles\u201d or something similar.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>For those looking for full text articles on human rights, there is good news and there is bad.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>First the bad:\u00a0 Using Google, Yahoo!, or any other internet search engine is going to provide <strong>very limited results<\/strong>.\u00a0 You may come up with a random article that someone cut and pasted and added to their website.\u00a0 You may come up with essays on human rights\u00a0that people have written on personal blogs.\u00a0\u00a0 Unfortunately, <strong>neither of these results are\u00a0appropriate for academic human rights research<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Instead, you need to find articles in <strong>peer-reviewed journals<\/strong>.\u00a0 Examples of peer reviewed journals include titles like <em>The Journal of Human Rights<\/em> and\u00a0<em>Human Rights Quarterly<\/em>, While there are a few journals freely available online, such as the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.law.harvard.edu\/students\/orgs\/hrj\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#7f1d1d\">Harvard Human Rights Journal,<\/span><\/a> the bulk of them are only available through subscription databases such as Academic Onefile (formerly InfoTrac), Proquest Research Library, J-STOR, Academic Search, etc.<\/p>\n<p>But now the good news!\u00a0 University students only need to go to their\u00a0school\u2019s library website to access\u00a0subscription databases for their research.\u00a0\u00a0UConn students have a number of tools available to them for finding\u00a0journal articles.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/classguides.lib.uconn.edu\/humanrights\" target=\"_blank\">Human Rights\u00a0Research Guide<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/classguides.lib.uconn.edu\/humanrights\">http:\/\/classguides.lib.uconn.edu\/humanrights<\/a>,\u00a0has an <span style=\"color:#7f1d1d\"><a href=\"http:\/\/classguides.lib.uconn.edu\/content.php?pid=30942&amp;sid=226146\" target=\"_blank\">entire page devoted to\u00a0databases and finding\u00a0journal articles<\/a> <\/span>on a variety of\u00a0human rights subjects.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For UConn students, all you have to do is click on the database links.\u00a0 (If you\u2019re off campus, login to the <a href=\"http:\/\/vpn.uconn.edu\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span style=\"color:#7f1d1d\">UConn Virtual Private Network (VPN)<\/span><\/a> first.)<\/p>\n<p>Once you\u2019re inside the database, many of them have ways to search for full text articles only.\u00a0 But what if the perfect\u00a0article for your\u00a0paper\u00a0comes up and it isn\u2019t available full text?<\/p>\n<p>For example, this citation, taken from the PAIS International database.\u00a0 The article does not come up as full text.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color:#008000\">Global Challenges: Climate Chaos and the Future of Development.<\/span><\/strong><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#008000\">Sachs, Wolfgang<\/span><br \/>\n<span style=\"color:#008000\"><strong>IDS Bulletin, vol. 38, no. 2, pp. 36-39, Mar 2007<\/strong><br \/>\n\u2026\u00a0development issues including economic growth &amp; equity, <strong><em>human rights<\/em><\/strong> &amp; wellbeing. He argues that the growth of the West was made possible by unsustainable exploitation of carbon resources &amp; the colonies, &amp; this can never again be repeated. The\u00a0\u2026<br \/>\n<\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www-ca1.csa.com\/ids70\/view_record.php?id=2&amp;recnum=9&amp;SID=d97ae8f21554ab568dcc3547d26d6f90\"><span style=\"color:#008000\">View Record<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#008000\"> | <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www-ca1.csa.com\/ids70\/linking.php?linktype=OpenILL&amp;record=ids%3Apais-set-c%2Fpais200707.wais.utf8fix+1718578+pais-set-c&amp;SID=d97ae8f21554ab568dcc3547d26d6f90\" target=\"OpenILLmenu\"><span style=\"color:#008000\">InterLibrary Loan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#008000\"> | <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www-ca1.csa.com\/ids70\/linking.php?linktype=OpenURL&amp;record=ids%3Apais-set-c%2Fpais200707.wais.utf8fix+1718578+pais-set-c&amp;SID=d97ae8f21554ab568dcc3547d26d6f90\" target=\"SFXmenu\"><span style=\"color:#008000\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sfx5.exlibrisgroup.com\/uconn\/img\/custom\/uconnsfx.gif\" alt=\"UConn Links\" align=\"top\" \/><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#008000\"> <\/span><\/p>\n<p>But, don\u2019t despair!\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Click on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www-ca1.csa.com\/ids70\/linking.php?linktype=OpenURL&amp;record=ids%3Apais-set-c%2Fpais200707.wais.utf8fix+1718578+pais-set-c&amp;SID=d97ae8f21554ab568dcc3547d26d6f90\" target=\"SFXmenu\"><span style=\"color:#008000\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/sfx5.exlibrisgroup.com\/uconn\/img\/custom\/uconnsfx.gif\" alt=\"UConn Links\" align=\"top\" \/><\/span><\/a><span style=\"color:#008000\"> <\/span>button at the bottom of the citation.\u00a0 When you do this, a new window opens telling you that <strong>UConn does in fact have this article available full text<\/strong> in another database.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>If you find an article that isn\u2019t available full text in any of UConn\u2019s databases, you can request the article through Document Delivery\/Inter-Library Loan (DD\/ILL) and a pdf copy will be emailed to you within 2-5 days.<\/p>\n<p>For human rights articles in particular, here are a\u00a0couple of\u00a0databases that I recommend.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/rdl.lib.uconn.edu\/databases\/903;go\"><span style=\"color:#7f1d1d\">Academic Onefile<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:1cm\">Includes most disciplines (multidisciplinary) with good coverage of both popular and scholarly publications.\u00a0 Click on the boxes to limit to peer reviewed articles.\u00a0 Can also limit search to full text only.<\/p>\n<p><a title=\"Connect to this database.\" href=\"http:\/\/rdl.lib.uconn.edu\/databases\/867;go\"><span style=\"color:#7f1d1d\">Columbia International Affairs Online (CIAO)<\/span><\/a><a href=\"http:\/\/rdl.lib.uconn.edu\/databases\/934;go\"><\/a><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-left:1cm\">Articles and reports on international affairs.
