{"id":1416,"date":"2016-09-28T11:50:37","date_gmt":"2016-09-28T15:50:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/humanrights\/?p=1416"},"modified":"2016-09-06T11:51:31","modified_gmt":"2016-09-06T15:51:31","slug":"the-end-draws-near-70-years-after-nuremberg","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/humanrights\/2016\/09\/28\/the-end-draws-near-70-years-after-nuremberg\/","title":{"rendered":"The end draws near  [70 Years After Nuremberg]"},"content":{"rendered":"<div style=\"width: 168px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"http:\/\/hdl.handle.net\/11134\/20002:1470\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/archives.lib.uconn.edu\/islandora\/object\/20002%3A1470\/datastream\/TN\" alt=\"\" width=\"158\" height=\"200\" \/><\/a><p class=\"wp-caption-text\">Nuremberg Palace<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Tom Dodd&#8217;s travels continued throughout September 1946.\u00a0 After leaving Switzerland, he arrived in Cannes, France by September 19th.\u00a0 Writing home, he notes that &#8220;Cannes is a very, very lovely place.\u00a0 Everything you read about the brevity of the female bathing suits is true&#8211;and worse.\u00a0 They are all practically nude&#8211;really.\u00a0 I am more accustomed to it tonight&#8211;after two days on the beach&#8211;but the first session had all of us a bit uneasy.&#8221; [p. 355, 9\/19\/1946]\u00a0 Sunbathing was left behind as they toured Nice and on to Monaco.\u00a0 <!--more-->Tom found the casino a &#8220;fascinating experience&#8221; filled with characters that one might find in novels&#8211;old crones, bearded gentlemen and flashy cosmopolites.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/humanrights\/files\/2016\/09\/blog_09191946p7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-thumbnail wp-image-1471\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/humanrights\/files\/2016\/09\/blog_09191946p7-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"blog_09191946p7\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a>\u00a0Unfortunately, his letter concludes with the information that the &#8220;trial&#8211;or better, the verdict&#8211;has been put over for one week.\u00a0 Jackson arrives in Paris tomorrow morning. He had already started when the delay was announced.\u00a0 I am really quite disappointed about the delay&#8211;it has been so long.\u00a0 However, it cannot be much longer now.&#8221; [p. 356, 9\/19\/1946]<\/p>\n<p>His travels complete, having decided against visiting Denmark, Norway and Sweden before returning to Germany, Tom pens his last letter to Grace from Nuremberg.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>September 26, 1946<\/p>\n<p>Grace dearest,<\/p>\n<p>this is probably the last full-dress letter that I will write to you from Germany.\u00a0 We know now that the verdict will come next Monday and Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Jackson was here when I got back [from Cannes].\u00a0 We had a long chat and he told me how much he appreciate what I had done&#8230;I expect to leave here Tuesday, as soon as the sentences are given, and will drive to Frankfurt and spend the night with Margie and Joe.\u00a0 I will leave Frankfurt early the next day for Bremerhaven and sail within a few days&#8230;[pp. 356-357, 9\/26\/1946]<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Dodd&#8217;s work was done and his role on the world stage at Nuremberg was almost at an end.\u00a0 It was with great eagerness that his attention turned toward\u00a0Connecticut and family&#8211;it was time to go home.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8211;Betsy Pittman<\/p>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The majority of the letters from Tom Dodd to his wife Grace have been published and can be found in <em>Letters from Nuremberg, My father\u2019s narrative of a quest for justice<\/em>.
