Penn Libraries’ Children’s Book Symposium

The Penn Libraries’ Children’s Book Symposium Creating Children’s Books: Collaboration and Change will take place in conjunction with two fall exhibitions in the University of Pennsylvania Libraries. The exhibitions are “As the Ink Flows: Works from the Pen of William Steig” which will explore the life and career of the artist, cartoonist, and children’s book author/illustrator William Steig, and “The School of Atha: Collaboration in the Making of Children’s Books” which celebrates the life and work of Atha Tehon, children’s book designer and longstanding Art Director for Dial Books for Young Readers. Richard Scarry II visits the NCLC

What a fantastic time we had on Sept. 19 when Richard “Huck” Scarry II visited with his lovely daughter Olympia and folks from Random House (Jason Zamajtuk, Lydia Finn, and Heidi Kilgras). We were joined by representatives from the School of Fine Arts, the English Department, the UConn Foundation, and the Neag School of Education.  Huck is on a tour to promote the reissue of his father’s book “Busy, Busy World.”

Everyone had a tour of the archives, looked at some of the Richard Scarry original illustrations, listened to a tape of Huck’s mother being interviewed by Richard Scarry’s art director Ole Risom, and had a wonderful dinner in the Reading Room. Thank you, Huck and everyone, for the visit. 

2014 Caldecott, Newbery Winners announced!

Congratulations to Brian Floca, winner of the 2014 Caldecott Medal, for his wonderful book Locomotive, which he wrote and illustrated, published by Atheneum Books for Young Readers.  The three Honor books are Journey, written and illustrated by Aaron Becker, published by Candlewick Press ;  Flora and the Flamingo, written and illustrated by Molly Idle, published by Chronicle Books LLC; and Mr. Wuffles, written and illustrated by David Wiesner, published by Clarion Books.

The winner of the 2014 Newbery Award is Kate DiCamillo for her Ulysses: The illuminated Adventures, published by Candlewick Press.  The four Honor books are Doll Bones, written by Holly Black, published by Margaret K. McElderry Books; The Year of Billy Miller, written by Kevin Henkes, published by Greenwillow Books; One Came Home, written by Amy Timberlake, published by Alfred A. Knopf; and Paperboy, written by Vince Vawter, published by Delacorte Press.

Three YA authors visit new Co-op

Braving a New England snowstorm yesterday, Chris Lynch, Brendan Kiely, and Jason Reynolds visited the new UConn Co-op Bookstore in Storrs Center.

Chris LynchChris Lynch is the Printz Honor Award-winning author of nearly a dozen books including the highly acclaimed young adult novels Pieces, Kill Switch, Angry Young Man and Inexcusable, a National Book Award finalist. Little Blue Lies, published this month, is his newest book. It is the gripping story of two teens who discover the danger of love.
Brendan KielyBrendan Kiely has published in Guernica, Big Bridge and other publications. Gospel of Winter is his debut novel. It is about the restorative power of truth and love after the trauma of abuse.
Jason Reynolds is the author of When I Was the Greatest, a gritty novel about life as an urban teen. He co-wrote My Name his Jason. Mine Too with is friend and artist Jason Douglas Griffin.

Check out Susan’s blog about the Pew Research Center’s Internet & American Life Project report on the impact digital technology and social media have on the arts in America.  Over 1200 NEA grantees participated in an online survey.  The report investigates the many uses of technology in the arts world and identifies challenges organizations face in difficult economic times.

CT Children’s Book Fair a smashing success

And a great time was had by all at the Connecticut Children’s Book Fair this past weekend!  Many thanks to our fantastic authors Harry Bliss, Bryan Collier, Katie Davis, Bruce Degen, Cathryn Falwell, Rita Williams-Garcia, Susan Hood, Tommy Greenwald, Leo Landry, Patricia MacLachlan, Barbara McClintock, Leslea Newman, Matthew Reinhart, Sergio Ruzzier, Robert Sabuda, Jerry Spinelli and Paul O. Zelinsky.  Our attendees, little and big, raved about the presentations and how excited they were to get their books signed.  The “This is Teen” panel sponsored by Scholastic featured Judy Blundell, Kim Harrington, Kirsty McKay, and Sonia Manzano.  Thanks for the great advice for our young writers!

Artists, writers, and performers, join other University of Connecticut students at an intensive 3-hour workshop to investigate marketing strategies and outreach, messaging, and goal setting as you set off on your career in the arts. “Arts Market Discovery” is free and sponsored by the Northeast Children’s Literature Collection, The Straightors Fund, and the Aetna Chair of Writing, English Department at the University of Connecticut.  Come prepared with a short description of a product or a concept you hope to promote. Susan Raab, CEO of Raab Associates, will help you identify your most marketable skills.  “Arts Market Discovery” will be presented in Konover Auditorium, Thomas J. Dodd Research Center, on September 28, 2012, from 9am to noon.

A second session in the afternoon will cover roles social media, public relations and other marketing tools play in discovering your public persona.  Students are welcome to stay for the afternoon program too.  Please register separately for each session.  Attendance is limited for both sessions so reserve your seat now with jean.nelson@lib.uconn.edu.

“Crafting a Public Identity” Workshop 9/28/2012 Dodd Research Center, Storrs, CT

“Crafting a public identity: a workshop for creative artists, writers and performers on navigating the arts business maze” will be presented at the Thomas J. Dodd Research Center on September 28, 2012, from 1-3:30pm in Konover Auditorium. Susan Raab, CEO of Raab Associates, will moderate a panel consisting of Charles Coe, Program Officer at the Massachusetts Cultural Council; Sharon Butler, Professor at Eastern Connecticut State University; Jeff Raab, 2012 graduate of NYU’s Steinhardt Musical Theatre Program;  Roxie Munro, author/illustrator of over 35 children’s books; and Laura Rossi Totten, a book publishing and public relations expert.
