As you may remember, the UConn Library, which runs the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/ctdigitalarchive.org\/\">Connecticut Digital Archive<\/a>, officially joined the DPLA as a hub for CT history in March. (1946) Retrieved from the Digital Public Library of America.<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Created originally by the Morrill Act of 1861, a designated college in each state was given grants of Federal land to sell that would then be used to support practical education in agriculture and industrial arts. Although not the original Land Grant college in Connecticut (that\u2019s another story that you can learn about <a href=\"https:\/\/whus.org\/2016\/02\/episode-2-yale-vs-storrs\/\">here<\/a>), Storrs Agricultural College was given Connecticut\u2019s Land Grant designation in 1893, a little more than 10 years after its founding in 1881 as the Storrs Agricultural School. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Land grant universities take their practical educational and\nextension programs seriously, and through the 19<sup>th<\/sup> and 20<sup>th<\/sup>\ncenturies they led the transformation of American agriculture from traditional\nto more scientific approaches, often running contests and competitions to\nencourage adoption of modern methods. \u201cChicken of Tomorrow\u201d contests held throughout\nthe country in the mid-twentieth century encouraged farmers to use scientific\nmethods to breed larger and more meaty chickens. Contrary to what you might\nexpect from the name of the competition, at the UConn the chickens were\ntypically displayed butchered, plucked, and ready for cooking. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/news\/files\/Chicken_Georgia.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1301\" width=\"224\" height=\"282\"\/><figcaption>Chicken of Tomorrow Contest (Colonial Poultry House), University of Georgia. Retrieved from the Digital Public Library of America. <\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Similarly unlucky chickens were featured at the University\nof Georgia\u2019s contest held at the Colonial Poultry House at the College of\nAgricultural and Environmental Sciences in the 1950s. And, although the\nchickens held by these two boys in North Logan, Utah were definitely alive,\nthey probably met the same fate as their Eastern cousins soon after this photo\nwas taken. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignright is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/news\/files\/Chicken_Utah.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-1302\" width=\"196\" height=\"227\"\/><figcaption>Dennis Funk, Sam King, and Larry Nyman (Chicken of Tomorrow), North Local City Library.
