{"id":294,"date":"2015-05-07T11:54:07","date_gmt":"2015-05-07T15:54:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/professionaldevelopment\/?p=294"},"modified":"2015-05-07T11:54:07","modified_gmt":"2015-05-07T15:54:07","slug":"computers-in-libraries-part-ii","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/professionaldevelopment\/2015\/05\/07\/computers-in-libraries-part-ii\/","title":{"rendered":"Computers in Libraries, Part II"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>At this year\u2019s Computers in Libraries conference in Washington, DC, I attended \u201c30 Mobile Apps for Librarians in 40 Minutes,\u201d presented by <a href=\"http:\/\/www.infodocket.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">INFOdocket&#8217;<\/a>s\u00a0Gary Price. \u00a0I\u2019d like to briefly share with you the apps I found most interesting from that presentation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.audionow.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">AudioNow<\/a> is a streaming audio service that connects mobile (or fixed) phone callers to live or pre-recorded radio broadcasts from around the world. \u00a0It\u2019s perfect for those without\u00a0WiFi access, there\u2019s no subscription fee, and users dial a\u00a0U.S. phone number. \u00a0*Regular calling rates apply<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/camfindapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">CamFind<\/a> is a visual search engine.\u00a0 You snap away and CamFind will identify most, if not all, of the objects in your picture. It then links you to purchase options which is a useful feature when you find an item you like in real life, but you\u2019re not too sure where the item is\u00a0sold. \u00a0<em>Free, iOS + Android<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/professionaldevelopment\/files\/2015\/05\/CamFind.jpg\" target=\"_blank\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-thumbnail wp-image-295\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.lib.uconn.edu\/professionaldevelopment\/files\/2015\/05\/CamFind-150x150.jpg\" alt=\"CamFind\" width=\"150\" height=\"150\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/darkskyapp.com\/\">DarkSky<\/a> is a weather app that uses state-of-the-art technology to predict the weather at your exact location and up to an hour in advance.\u00a0<em>$3.99, iOS<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/photomath.net\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Photomath<\/a> is a camera calculator. You snap a picture of a mathematical equation and the app will solve it for you in real time, providing a step-by-step breakdown (math teachers beware). \u00a0<em>Free, iOS + Android<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/sight.sc\/\" target=\"_blank\">Sight<\/a> saves an entire\u00a0article with just a\u00a0screenshot and allows you to read it offline at a later time.\u00a0<em>Free, iOS<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.soundhound.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Soundhound<\/a> is a sound recognition app.. It will identify a song that is currently playing and provide you with song lyrics, artist information, and purchase options. \u00a0It will also connect you to performance videos and music streaming services like Spotify.\u00a0<em>Free, iOS + Android<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbanengines.com\/get-the-app\/\">Urban Engines<\/a> is a public transit app. It\u00a0uses\u00a0real-time data and allows you to download city maps which are\u00a0totally accessible offline; great if you frequent areas with weak wireless signals.\u00a0<em>Free, iOS + Android<\/em><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/questvisual.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Word Lens <\/a>\u00a0is a real-time translator.
