She is a founder of the contemporary lesbian-feminist and Jewish feminist movements.  Born in Warsaw, Poland in 1941, Irena Klepfisz narrowly escaped Nazi persecution with her mother who was able to disguise them both as non-Jews.<\/p>\n<p>Her father was a leader in the Warsaw uprising against the Nazis.  She arrived in the United States when she was eight years old, speaking only Polish and Yiddish.  Today, she is an internationally acclaimed Yiddish scholar, with an expertise in Jewish women writers.
