Parineeta is an adaptation of the famous 1914 novel written by Sarat Chandra Chatterji. Thefilm explores the love that develops between childhood friends, Lolita (Vidya Balan) and Shekhar (Saif Ali Khan). Lolita is an orphan who is raised in her uncle’s family. Shekhar’s father, Nabin Roy, a dishonest businessman, plots to take control of Lolita’s ancestral house for commercial purposes. Another man, Girin (Sanjay Dutt), steps in to rescue Lolita’s family from being evicted and earns their gratitude. While Shekhar is jealous of Girin’s attentiveness to Lolita, he also has to take a stand against his father’s unethical ways and his authoritarianism.
