At the start of the Fall 2007 semester, our library upgraded nine new computer stations with Microsoft Office 2007 (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Access not Publisher). Microsoft Office 2007 has a very different look to it than it’s predecessor. Too many changes to list here but Microsoft has a training page to learn more about Office 2007.

Our most asked question since we’ve gotten Office 2007 is how to print. There is two simple methods to print from our library computer stations:

1. Click on the CTRL key + P

2. or Click on the Microsoft Logo and select “Print” from the drop down menu

3. either choice will bring up the print dialogue box to select the library’s Cash or Card printer options.

The UConn Libraries access to the Boston Library Consortium (BLC) Virtual Catalog is currently not available today. Steps to restore service is underway.

UConn staff, students and faculty are encouraged to make their Loan request via WorldCat (http://rdl.lib.uconn.edu/databases/947)> for books outside of the UConn system. For books within the UConn Library system, please continue to use the Inter Campus Express (ICE) online form. Look for the “request ice” tab in the HOMER, library catalog. You will need your NetID to login.

What is the BLC?
The Virtual Catalog provides a single, searchable catalog of books owned by participating libraries of the Boston Library Consortium. Qualified patrons of these libraries may directly request material from the other participants. UConn students, faculty and staff (including retirees) may search and request material from 19 libraries.

Due to system upgrades the library’s services for Book and Journal requests via Interlibrary Loan, BLC , Interacampus requests and online book renewals will not be accessible until Tuesday, September 4th.

However, the Library Catalog will still be searchable for book titles, authors and subject searches.

Books at other UConn campuses are now easily requested right through HOMER, our online catalog, and delivered to your local campus library for pick-up. Just  select the Library’s Intercampus Campus Express  (ICE) tab    on the top upper bar on the library’s catalog.

To use this service:

• Locate the record for the book in HOMER
• Select “Request ICE” or “Request Recall” from the toolbar
• Log in with your NetID and password
• Select ICE from the drop down box and click OK.
• Select the copy or volume needed, if applicable, and select a pickup location – the default location is Babbidge.
• Click Submit Request and you’re done!

That’s it!

Guidelines:

• BOOKS ONLY can be requested, not journals. No exceptions.
• JOURNAL ARTICLES must be requested through Document Delivery < http://www.lib.uconn.edu/docdel/ >
• Receive notice through UConn email address ONLY (…@uconn.edu)!
  
  • Notice of the book’s arrival will come to your UCONN.EDU email address. Be sure to check your UConn email or set up forwarding.

Have a citation? Looking to see if the library has full-text available of an article? Check out the Libraries Full-text Article Finder / SFX Citation Linker!

You can use this screen if you have a known item citation & want to see if we have the full-text. Because this links to SFX, if we don’t have the full-text online, you can check homer from the SFX menu and request the item via DD/ILL if we don’t have it in print either.

A couple of nifty features: you can search this box with just a PubMed id, if you have it. You can also search by ISSN rather than journal title if that’s easier.

The Citation Linker is linked on the “Most Used Databases” page as well as on the “Online Resources” page.

Starting July 1, faculty, staff, graduate students, and honors students are able to check out books for six months and renew them online five times, thus allowing books to be borrowed for three years before they must be returned. Although books may be borrowed for up to 3 years, they are still subject to RECALL under this new policy.
